System & Network Administration
This page outlines all of the system and network administration projects I
have been involved with over the years. Each entry states the organization
and project name or gereral purpose of the installation. There is a description
of the project and the software used, along with some of the highlights or
challenges, followed by a list of hardware and operating systems. (See also:

Had responsibility for the company network and several development and public servers. All of the servers and several of the workstations were running different flavours of Linux, while the other workstations had various Windows versions. Configured a Linux box connected to a cable modem to act as the gateway/router to provide shared connectivity (NAT) and remote network access along with security measures (packet filtering firewall with port forwarding, port scan detector, and log file monitor).
Hardware: 2 public web servers, 2 internal development servers (web/cvs, db), 1 gateway, 10+ workstations
OS: GNU/Linux (Debian, RedHat), Windows clients
- repo.com - web-based e-mail service
-
Installed and configured all necessary software (sendmail, imapd, Apache, PHP) for a web-based e-mail service with secure login procedure.
Hardware: 1 public web server
OS: GNU/Linux (RedHat)
- nunatak informatics - business network

Wired the nunatak office with a secure, shared Internet connection and a development environment. There is a main Linux machine that provides a DSL connection (using PPPoE) with kernel-level routing (NAT), dynamic 'ipchains' firewall script, a port scan detector, and a log file monitor, along with the following services: SSH, Apache (PHP), MySQL, BIND, and OpenLDAP. It also performs port forwarding to a Windows machine running IIS with ColdFusion.
Hardware: 2 internal development servers with limited remote access
OS: GNU/Linux (Debian), Windows 2000 Professional
- Canadian Teachers Federation - extranet server
-
Implemented a Linux server inside their Novell network to that provided: Apache (PHP), MySQL (with MS Access clients), 'Majordomo' mailing lists, 'exim' MTA, samba, and FTP.
Hardware: 1 extranet web server
OS: GNU/Linux (Debian)
- tao.ca - community server project
-
Was part of a collective of server administrators for organization that provides network services for a geographically dispersed community. Users can use an SSH shell, check e-mail, publish web pages, and use IRC from the server. Tasks included: account creation, Majordomo list creation + management, virtual hosting (domains, Apache), and security evaluations.
Hardware: 1 public server (1000+ users), 1 list server (400+ lists)
OS: GNU/Linux (Debian)
- TDG - Internet servers and office services
-
Was responsible for hardware purchasing, software installation (operating systems, office applications, networking tools), and workstation maintenance (Windows 95/NT). Also ran internal file and print servers (NT 4) and Internet servers (Netscape FastTrack with SSL, POP3/IMAP, FTP).
Hardware: 2 file/print servers, 2 public web servers, 20+ workstations
OS: Windows NT 4, FreeBSD, HP-UX, Windows clients
